Wasteland 2 and Linux

Posted on March 20, 2012

Back in the 80s, when computer roleplaying games with simple graphics but deep story lines were the popular thing, there was a game called Wasteland, hailed as a classic by many.  Later, the team behind Wasteland wanted to make a sequel but didn't have the rights to it, so instead they made Fallout, what many called the spiritual successor to Wasteland.

Now, the team has all the rights to Wasteland and is working on the sequel Wasteland 2.  They weren't able to find a big publisher to pick up the game because, face it, big publishers tend to be completely out of touch with what people really want these days.  So, they decided to fund the project through Kickstarter.

They set a goal of $900,000 which they reached in just a little over two days.  For those that were fans of the original Wasteland, what could be better?  How about a Linux version?

Brian Fargo, the head of inXile entertainment, the company that's heading up Wasteland 2, has stated that if they reach $1.5 million, they'll make a Linux version of the game.  Right now they have $1.42 million.  They're so close to the Linux goal.  With just a little bit more, there will be a Linux version of Wasteland 2.

Customer Relations Awareness

Posted on December 31, 2011

There's been quite a to-do on the Internet lately about a fiasco involving Ocean Marketing and N-Control, all about a video game controller device (the original article can be found here, and a follow-up article  can be found here).

Something about this situation really stood out to me.  It seems like many companies don't have any idea what their PR firms or customer service departments are doing.

I myself had an interesting experience with a direct-sales Internet guitar company, that sells a variety of their own brand of guitars and guitar parts inexpensively from their website.  You can only buy their products directly from them.

I had never purchased a guitar from them before but I was interested, so I decided to give them a try.  The guitar had a number of defects, the most serious of which was in its wiring and electronics.  Needless to say, I was disappointed.  Even though the guitar wasn't as expensive as some, it wasn't exactly cheap either.

Goblin Dell Adventure Sketch

An adventure sketch, Goblin Dell, has been added to the Narrative Pants page.  Adventure sketches are small write-ups giving a basic outline of an area or setting which can be used for ideas while playing Narrative Pants.

Free Narrative Pants Released

Posted on December 16, 2011

The new free roleplaying game, Narrative Pants, has been released.

I made this game because I wanted a really simple, narrative-focused game, a game where the focus is really on the story, where the players have narrative control from time to time and the game can be played without any preparation, purely through improvisation.  I thought, "I want a game you can play by the seat of your pants," which is where the name came from.

Not long after having this thought I had the idea for the Narrative Pants game system.  I decided to write it up into a little pamphlet so I could share it with others.

I also skipped the explanations of what a roleplaying game is and the explanations of what same basic parts of the game system are, such as percentile dice, as I figured the majority of people that picked up this game would already be familiar with roleplaying.

You can check it out and download it from here.
